In a recent turn of events, more than two dozen renters and homeowners on the east side of Pape Avenue in Riverdale have been informed they will need to vacate their homes for the construction of the Ontario Line. While the news was unexpected, it’s now confirmed that 25 properties between Langley and Riverdale Avenues will be acquired by Metrolinx as part of the project.
For many residents, like Kate Maynard, who has lived in the area for over 30 years, the news is heartbreaking. “I’ve been a part of this community for a very long time… It’s hard to believe that we won’t be able to afford to stay in Riverdale,” Maynard shared. Despite reassurances in previous meetings that their homes wouldn’t be impacted, residents were recently notified of the expropriation in an emergency meeting.
Metrolinx cited updated information on soil conditions and the risk of structural impacts as the reason for acquiring the properties. While homeowners will receive compensation at fair market value, the emotional toll and uncertainty of being displaced have left many residents feeling powerless. Some residents may have the option to move back once construction is completed, depending on the extent of the damage and repairs needed.
For those who have built their lives in this neighbourhood, the sudden upheaval is overwhelming. Many fear that the rising real estate market will make it impossible to remain in Riverdale, even if they wish to return.
This situation serves as a stark reminder of how large-scale infrastructure projects can disrupt communities. The affected homeowners and tenants are now left navigating a difficult path ahead.
