Everything you need to know about home energy audits

Saving energy in our homes is important for both environmental and financial reasons, but it’s not always easy to pinpoint how you can reduce your personal energy consumption — you may need the help of an expert who conducts a home energy audit before you can make necessary updates. So, what does this process look like?

What is a home energy audit?

When you arrange a home energy audit, a third-party company will send an expert to your home to assess the current efficiency of energy use in your home. They’ll check your heating and cooling system’s effectiveness, and quality of insulation, and test for leaks where air could be escaping.

Why should I have one?

At the end of the process, you’ll receive an EnerGuide rating and label, along with recommendations for making your home more energy efficient. You could qualify for energy efficiency incentives and rebates which could cut down household costs, like your utility bills. Plus, a more efficient home helps the environment by conserving energy—and this can also be helpful for resale value if you sell your home.

What incentives and rebates could my home qualify for?

As long as your home energy assessment or audit is performed with a Registered Energy Advisor (REA), there are numerous incentives you could qualify for as a residential homeowner in Toronto. These could include:

  • Air sealing
  • Heat pumps
  • Smart thermostats
  • Windows and doors
  • Insulation
  • Solar equipment

How do I get started with a home energy audit?

Enbridge and the Government of Canada have partnered to make home energy audits simpler, and you can receive a rebate of up to $600 to offset the cost of your home evaluation. Just make sure you use a Registered Energy Provider. You can start by finding one in your area here.
